Could the Palace's Medical Mysteries Be Connected to a Larger Struggle for Influence?

A fan theory focuses on one of the defining features of The Apothecary Diaries: the way apparently small medical incidents can reveal much larger problems.
Maomao has solved mysteries involving illnesses, poison, unusual symptoms, and suspicious behavior. These cases are satisfying because the explanations often depend on details that seemed insignificant at first.
The theory for Season 3 is that a series of seemingly separate medical incidents could eventually reveal a broader pattern of political competition within the imperial court.
This does not mean that every illness must be part of a grand conspiracy. The more interesting possibility is that ordinary medical problems could become entangled with the ambitions of people who recognize how vulnerable the palace is to fear, rumors, and uncertainty.

Why Medical Problems Are Politically Dangerous

Inside an imperial household, a medical incident rarely affects only one person.
If a servant becomes seriously ill, people may suspect negligence. If a member of an influential family experiences unexplained symptoms, others may wonder whether somebody intended to harm them. If a dangerous substance is discovered, the incident could damage the reputation of an entire household.
Even when nobody has committed a crime, uncertainty can create political consequences.
Maomao understands this because she approaches these incidents differently from people who rely on rumors. She wants to identify the actual cause rather than accept the first explanation that seems convenient.
That approach can expose mistakes, misunderstandings, and deliberate deception.
The fan theory suggests that Season 3 could use this familiar structure on a larger scale. Instead of a single mystery involving one person, Maomao might encounter several incidents that appear unrelated but share a common source.
For example, different people might experience suspicious symptoms after encountering substances supplied by the same network. Alternatively, a sequence of rumors about illness could benefit one household while damaging another.
These are hypothetical scenarios, not claims about specific Season 3 plot events.
The key idea is that medical evidence could reveal connections that political investigations fail to notice.

What If the Real Weapon Is Fear?

Poison is an obvious source of danger in a story centered on a talented apothecary. But fear can be equally powerful.
Imagine a situation in which nobody knows whether an illness is contagious, whether food is safe, or whether a trusted servant has been secretly replaced. Even without an actual assassin, uncertainty could cause people to distrust one another.
A person seeking influence might benefit from that confusion.
If one household believes another is responsible for a suspicious illness, its members could become hostile. If an official loses confidence in the people responsible for supplying medicine, rivals might exploit the resulting disorder.
The conspiracy theory proposes that someone could manipulate these fears without personally committing every suspected crime.
That would make the investigation much more difficult for Maomao. Identifying the cause of a medical problem would be only the beginning. She would also need to determine who benefits from the rumors surrounding it.
This distinction is important because the person who causes an incident and the person who profits from it are not necessarily the same.
A medical problem might occur accidentally, but a political rival could exploit it. A minor act of deception might trigger a much larger conflict than its original perpetrator intended.
Such a scenario would suit the series' mixture of detective work and palace intrigue.

Could Maomao Discover a Pattern That Nobody Wants Explained?

Maomao's greatest strength is her willingness to follow evidence even when the answer is uncomfortable.
She does not generally begin an investigation by deciding which person she wants to blame. Instead, she observes the available clues and tries to identify the explanation that best fits them.
That makes her dangerous to anyone whose influence depends on a false story remaining believable.
The theory suggests that a larger mystery could eventually put Maomao in conflict with people who do not necessarily want to kill her but would prefer that she stop asking questions.
They might attempt to discredit her conclusions, redirect her attention, or convince others that her findings are unreliable.
This would create a different kind of danger from facing an obvious enemy. Maomao might have enough evidence to understand what happened but struggle to persuade people who have political reasons to reject the explanation.
The challenge would then involve both science and communication.
How can she demonstrate that a substance caused an illness when influential people insist that the problem has another explanation? How can she expose a deliberate deception when the person responsible has powerful allies? And how can she protect herself when proving the truth might damage someone who controls her working environment?
These questions could turn a familiar medical mystery into a much broader examination of power.

The Most Interesting Possibility: Nobody Controls the Entire Conspiracy

The wildest version of this theory does not imagine a single mastermind controlling every incident.
Instead, it suggests that several people with different goals could unintentionally create a larger pattern.
One person might conceal a medical mistake to protect their reputation. Another might spread a rumor to weaken a rival. A third might exploit the confusion to gain access to a position of influence.
Individually, these actions might seem unrelated. Together, they could create a dangerous situation that nobody fully understands.
This would be an especially interesting challenge for Maomao because solving the mystery would require her to understand several different motives rather than identify one villain.
It would also reinforce a central strength of The Apothecary Diaries: the palace is not simply a place where clever detectives catch evil criminals. It is a complicated social environment in which ambition, fear, ignorance, and ordinary human mistakes can interact in unpredictable ways.
There is no confirmation that Season 3 will introduce such a connected series of medical mysteries. Nevertheless, the theory offers a compelling possibility for future storytelling.
Perhaps the most dangerous mystery is not one in which someone has discovered an especially powerful poison.
Perhaps it is one in which the truth is medically clear, politically inconvenient, and deliberately obscured by people who each have something different to gain from keeping everyone confused.
