Jujutsu Kaisen — Are Cursed Techniques Shaped by Human Expectations More Than Sorcerers Realize?

A fascinating fan theory about Jujutsu Kaisen is that cursed techniques may reveal something about the way humans understand the world, rather than functioning merely as supernatural abilities that individuals happen to possess.

The series already establishes a strong connection between negative human emotions and curses. Fear, hatred, resentment, and other forms of psychological suffering contribute to the supernatural dangers that sorcerers confront.

The theory takes this idea a step further: perhaps the way humans conceptualize their fears and desires also influences how supernatural power develops, is interpreted, or becomes effective.

This does not mean every technique is secretly created by someone's imagination. Instead, the theory explores whether the relationship between human psychology and cursed energy is deeper than it first appears.
Why Human Emotions Matter in Jujutsu Kaisen
In many fantasy stories, magic exists independently of human feelings. A character learns a spell, gains access to an energy source, or inherits an ability.

Jujutsu Kaisen uses a different framework. Cursed energy is strongly associated with negative emotions, connecting the supernatural world to ordinary psychological experiences.

This creates an interesting possibility: if human emotions help produce the energy that fuels curses, then humanity's collective understanding of certain fears could have consequences beyond individual psychology.

Consider the difference between fearing a particular person and fearing an entire category of things.

One fear may remain personal and limited. Another may be shared by thousands or millions of people, becoming part of a larger cultural understanding of danger.

The fan theory suggests that these collective ideas could help explain why some supernatural threats feel closely connected to recognizable human anxieties.

A curse associated with a widely feared concept is not merely an individual monster. It represents something that many people find disturbing.

Could Techniques Reflect the Way People Organize Reality?

Cursed techniques often have distinctive rules and limitations. Their usefulness depends on understanding how they operate, not simply possessing large quantities of cursed energy.

This encourages sorcerers to think strategically. An ability may be powerful in one situation but ineffective in another, and understanding its rules can be as important as raw strength.

The theory proposes that techniques can be interpreted as supernatural expressions of particular ways of interacting with reality.

Some abilities emphasize space, others physical characteristics, and others unusual conditions or exchanges. Their differences make the supernatural system feel less like a collection of interchangeable attacks and more like a set of specialized principles.

From this perspective, a technique's conceptual structure is part of what makes it interesting.

The important question is not merely how much power the user possesses, but what rules the ability imposes on the world.

This also explains why battles in Jujutsu Kaisen frequently reward intelligence. A fighter who understands an opponent's technique may find a solution that would be impossible through brute force alone.

The Role of Fear and Reputation

Another version of the theory focuses on the way people perceive powerful sorcerers and dangerous curses.

Reputation can change how a confrontation unfolds. If an opponent is believed to be unbeatable, other characters may become hesitant or make poor decisions before the battle has properly begun.

This is a psychological effect rather than necessarily a supernatural one, but it matters in a world where attention, interpretation, and tactical judgment can determine survival.

The theory asks whether the supernatural system and the psychological effects of reputation reinforce each other.

Perhaps the way people understand a technique influences how they prepare for it. Perhaps the reputation of a curse changes the kinds of strategies people consider possible. Or perhaps fear makes it harder for opponents to recognize weaknesses that would otherwise be obvious.

These possibilities do not require cursed energy to obey every human belief. They simply suggest that the human mind is an important part of the environment in which supernatural battles take place.

The Conspiracy Theory: Are Sorcerers Misunderstanding the Source of Their Own Power?

The more speculative version proposes that sorcerers understand the practical mechanics of cursed techniques better than they understand their broader origins.

They may know how to activate an ability, improve its effectiveness, and use its limitations strategically without fully understanding why supernatural power takes the forms it does.

This is not unusual in fantasy worldbuilding. Characters can master a system through experience long before they discover its complete theoretical explanation.

If this theory were explored further, it could reveal new connections between cursed energy, collective human emotions, and the way supernatural abilities are classified.

Perhaps some techniques appear unrelated because sorcerers have organized them according to practical differences rather than deeper similarities.

Alternatively, the apparent connections might simply be thematic rather than evidence of a hidden mechanism.

The distinction matters: there is no established proof that all cursed techniques originate from a single psychological principle beyond the series' existing rules.

Why This Theory Is Worth Discussing

The theory offers a way to appreciate Jujutsu Kaisen's battles beyond their animation and destructive power.

It encourages viewers to ask how the supernatural system reflects the people living within it.

If cursed energy is connected to negative emotions, then the world of jujutsu is also a world in which ordinary human suffering has extraordinary consequences. Fear is not merely an emotion experienced by characters. It is part of the conditions that allow supernatural threats to exist.

That creates an unsettling relationship between humanity and the monsters it fights.

The sorcerers are not simply defending civilization against an entirely separate supernatural world. They are confronting dangers that are, in an important sense, connected to humanity itself.

The most intriguing question is therefore whether understanding cursed techniques requires more than learning their mechanics.

Perhaps the deeper challenge is understanding the human fears, assumptions, and emotions that give the world of curses its distinctive character.
