Killua Zoldyck vs. Megumi Fushiguro: Which Character Makes the Better Supporting Hero?

Supporting characters play an important role in making anime stories interesting. While the protagonist usually receives the most attention, a memorable supporting character can sometimes become just as popular.

Two examples are Killua Zoldyck from Hunter x Hunter and Megumi Fushiguro from Jujutsu Kaisen.

Both characters are talented fighters with complicated backgrounds. They are also relatively calm compared with their energetic protagonists.

However, their personalities, motivations, fighting abilities, and relationships create very different character experiences.
Background and Personal History
Killua comes from the Zoldyck family, a famous family of professional assassins.

His upbringing is extremely unusual because he has been trained to fight, endure pain, and eliminate targets from a young age.

Despite his background, Killua is not simply an emotionless assassin. His journey introduces viewers to someone who gradually discovers friendship, personal freedom, and the possibility of choosing his own future.

Megumi has a different background.

He comes from a family connected to the world of jujutsu sorcery and possesses an inherited technique with considerable potential.

His childhood and family circumstances influence his understanding of justice and his willingness to protect certain people.

While Killua struggles to escape the expectations imposed by his family, Megumi struggles with the responsibilities and consequences associated with his abilities and personal beliefs.
Personality
Killua is one of the most entertaining characters in Hunter x Hunter.

He is intelligent, observant, sarcastic, and frequently enjoys teasing Gon. His playful personality makes his darker background particularly interesting.

He can be extremely serious during battles, but his interactions with friends reveal a more relaxed and emotionally expressive side.

Megumi is generally more reserved.

He does not usually express his emotions as openly as Yuji Itadori or some of the other characters. His personality is more serious, and he often approaches situations with careful consideration.

However, Megumi is not completely emotionless. His decisions reveal that he cares deeply about certain people, even when he does not openly communicate those feelings.

Comparison: Killua is more entertaining as a personality-driven character, while Megumi offers a quieter and more serious personality that complements the energetic atmosphere of Jujutsu Kaisen.
Fighting Abilities
Killua's greatest advantage is his exceptional physical training.

His assassin background gives him impressive reflexes, agility, stealth, and combat instincts.

His Nen abilities further improve his fighting style, particularly through his electricity-based techniques.

Godspeed is especially interesting because it allows him to use electricity to enhance his movement and reaction capabilities.

Megumi uses the Ten Shadows Technique, which allows him to summon different shikigami for combat and tactical purposes.

His fighting style is more versatile than simply attacking an opponent directly. He can use his summons to create distractions, control the battlefield, and respond to different situations.

Killua is particularly effective in fast-paced encounters where speed and precision matter.

Megumi is interesting because his abilities encourage strategic thinking and creative combinations.
Relationships With the Main Characters
Killua's relationship with Gon is one of the central emotional elements of Hunter x Hunter.

Their friendship is important because Gon gives Killua an opportunity to experience something different from the life he previously knew.

Killua gradually becomes more comfortable expressing himself and making decisions based on his own feelings.

Megumi's relationship with Yuji is also important, although their friendship develops differently.

Yuji's energetic personality contrasts with Megumi's serious attitude. Their different perspectives create an interesting partnership.

Megumi is also one of the people who introduces Yuji to the dangerous world of jujutsu sorcery.

Both characters benefit from their relationships with their protagonists, but Killua's personal development is particularly closely connected to his friendship with Gon.
Strengths and Weaknesses as Supporting Characters
Killua's greatest strength is his character development.

He is not merely someone who accompanies the protagonist. He has his own internal conflicts, personal goals, and emotional struggles.

His intelligence and combat abilities also make him useful in situations where Gon might struggle.

His main limitation is that his personal development sometimes becomes closely connected to his relationship with Gon and his family.

Megumi's greatest strength is his tactical personality and mysterious potential.

His inherited abilities offer numerous possibilities, and his serious attitude creates a good balance within the main group.

However, some viewers may wish to see more opportunities for his personal ambitions and relationships to receive attention.
Character Design and Appearance
Killua's white hair and blue eyes give him a distinctive appearance. His relatively casual clothing also contrasts with his dangerous assassin background.

His design communicates a combination of youthful innocence and hidden combat ability.

Megumi has a darker visual style, with his spiky black hair and relatively understated clothing.

His appearance fits his reserved personality and the darker atmosphere of Jujutsu Kaisen.

Both characters have recognizable designs that communicate their personalities without requiring complicated costumes or excessive visual details.
Final Verdict
Killua Zoldyck and Megumi Fushiguro are excellent supporting characters because they contribute more than just additional fighting abilities.

Killua stands out through his emotional development, entertaining personality, and complicated relationship with his family.

Megumi stands out through his tactical fighting style, reserved personality, and interesting inherited abilities.

If the main consideration is emotional development and the relationship between a protagonist and supporting character, Killua has a particularly strong advantage.

If the main consideration is combat versatility, mysterious potential, and a serious personality, Megumi is an excellent choice.

Personally, Killua is the more complete supporting character in terms of the amount of emotional development presented throughout his story. However, Megumi has considerable appeal, and his abilities and personality make him an important part of Jujutsu Kaisen.

Both demonstrate that supporting characters can become some of the most memorable parts of an anime series.
